Pressing is how teams defend with the intention to attack. Instead of waiting for the opponent to make a mistake, they force one.

The three main types

  • High press: hunt the ball in the opponent’s half, close to their goal
  • Mid-block: stay compact in midfield and press when the ball enters a trap
  • Counter-press: win the ball back within seconds of losing it

Pressing triggers

Good pressing is not chaos. Teams wait for triggers — a heavy touch, a pass to a full-back near the touchline, a player receiving with their back to goal — then press together as one unit.

“The best playmaker in the world is the counter-press.”
— A popular coaching idea

Next match you watch, look for the moment the whole team suddenly sprints forward at once. That is a pressing trap being sprung.
